Good Company

Pick a Circle, Gather Squares on page 2 of September 2014 Scholastic Firefly Flyer! Pick a Circle, Gather Squares: A Fall Harvest of Shapes, the first book in my picture book series, is keeping good company with the likes of Clifford the Big Red Dog, Johnny Appleseed, and Amelia Bedelia in Scholastic’s September 2014 Firefly flyer!

My sister posted this image on Facebook the day my niece and nephew brought the flyer home in their backpacks. I remember being their age, thrilled to pore over and pick a book from the flyer myself.

The first picture book I remember selecting: The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats. A few other favorites that come to mind: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Happiness Is a Warm Puppy, and Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing (“because it might make life hard for a chicken”).

Sugar White Snow interior page SquirrelIt was such a busy summer and the beginning of autumn is proving equally bountiful. I’m scheduling author visits for the newly released Sugar White Snow and Evergreens: A Winter Wonderland of Color and am anticipating the appearance of Sun Above and Blooms Below: A Springtime of Opposites (March 2015), which take a class field trip to see chicks hatch, under the guidance of the energetic Miss Ava—named after my energetic niece. This will be the fourth and final book in the series. Also in the works, my first prose picture book, Nonsense, inspired by Ava’s brother, my beautiful above-mentioned nephew, who is autistic.

Finally, I just signed my sixth picture book contract with Albert Whitman yesterday! The book-writing sideboard is groaning, and I’m truly grateful.

Here’s looking forward to a hearty, healthy harvest and holiday season for one and all!
